Alte Landbrugg, Hinterrhein in the Rheinwald
The Alte Landbrugg is a stone bridge in the municipality of Hinterrhein in the Rheinwald. It spans the Hinterrhein in two arches, is 2.5 meters wide and almost 40 meters long.
On behalf of the Rheinwald region, the municipality of Hinterrhein commissioned master builder Peter Zurr (also Saurr) from Bergün to build a two-arched bridge with a hexagonal central pillar south of the village over the Hinterrhein. At this point the old mule track crossed the river over the San Bernardino Pass and then climbed steeply towards the top of the pass. The old road reached today's pass road at the top bend.
The old Landbrugg was completed in 1693, the construction cost was 300 guilders.
As early as July 1, 1696, the new bridge partially collapsed. Master Bartolomeo Stornino from Chiavenna was entrusted with the reconstruction; he received 400 guilders for his work. As a result, the bridge was damaged several times by flooding. In 1931 the northern yoke collapsed; In 1935 it was restored with the help of the Swiss Homeland Security. The repairs to the drawn-in concrete elements below the arch of the bridge are recognizable. Today the hiking trail leads from the Rheinwald over the pass to San Bernardino over the bridge.
