The main sights include the historic old town with the St. John's Cathedral, the town hall, the castle district around the Count Palatine's Castle with the court church and the riding stables on the Residenzplatz. On the outskirts of the town, the baroque pilgrimage church of Mariahilf and the Wolfstein castle ruins are worth a visit.

Traces of the first settlement can be traced back to the Neolithic period, and there are numerous burial mounds and several Celtic ramparts around Neumarkt. The town is believed to have been founded in the 6th century. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Neumarkt was the Palatine's residence. Count Palatine Johann moved his seat of government here.

During the Nazi regime, Neumarkt was nicknamed "Dietrich Eckhart City" because the man who came up with the ideas for the terrible NSDAP ideology was born in Neumarkt.

Neumarkt i.d. Upper Palatinate has a beautiful old town. There are some lodgings as well as many cafes or possibilities to stop off.

Neumarkt town center with the town hall and its market street (all cobblestones).
In summer, numerous cafes, ice cream parlors and restaurants/beer gardens invite you to linger. In December you can find the Neumarkt Christmas market in front of the town hall.
