It was once just a small stream that flowed from the mill pond through the old town to the harbour. But as early as the 13th century, this watercourse, the "pit", was regulated, dammed for the operation of mills and made navigable for barges. Wooden pipes led the water to pumping points in the city, and laundry was even washed in the “pit” back then.

The streets running along the "Grube" bear the names of the three sections, downstream the city canal is divided into the Mühlengrube, Fresh Pit and Round Pit areas. At the Mühlengrube, the "Alte Stadtmühle" from 1855 is a prominent building. The steam mill represents a historicizing brick building.

As early as 1229 there was a water mill at the eastern entrance of the Mühlenbach into the city centre.[4] The old town mill that is preserved today was built in 1855/1856 as a steam mill and later expanded. It is a historicizing brick building.

When the Hanseatic city of Wismar was founded in 1229, an artificial watercourse was created to supply the city with drinking water, the pit. The first water mill was also built here. A mill still stands on this site today. The building complex with mill, machine house, chimney and miller's apartment consists of red brick, which is typical for northern Germany. It was created in 1856 when it was converted into a steam mill. Furthermore, the water power of the pit could also be used with a Nagel turbine. In GDR times the entire technology disappeared - the complex was now used as a wholesale warehouse. However, the mill remained in its external form and was already under monument protection.
