Schloss Holtmühle is a water castle from the 14th century. The first known inhabitant was Otto von Holtmeulen. After him, the castle was named as well.
One of the most spectacular castles was Joachim von Glasenapp (1717-1800), who was rumored to be a member of the "Bokkenrijders", a band of robbers who rioted in Limburg at the end of the 18th century. There is no evidence for that.
The castle must have been about twice as large as today before 1852. Much of the outbuildings were demolished. Fortunately, the Tiendschuur (tithe barn) is still preserved.
The complex also includes two beautiful castle gates: the Kaldenkirch Gate (towards Germany) and the Venloer Tor (the main entrance). The castle is surrounded by a moat, surrounded by a park-like castle garden with pond.
Schloss Holtmühle is currently used as a hotel.
