At a confluence of streams hidden at the top of a hillside is the best preserved black town in Madrid. Patones de Arriba is part of a group of characteristic mountain towns shared by Madrid and Guadalajara where slate is the main construction element that gives the buildings a dark, almost black colour. These are known as "black towns". Its location has given it a strategic importance that its inhabitants have taken advantage of since the Iron Age, Romans, Visigoths, Muslims and Christians.

During the reign of Carlos III the town belonged administratively to Uceda, but the difficulty of communications and displacement due to the orography produced a sensation of administrative abandonment in its inhabitants. This led them to make the decision to choose one of the neighbors and grant him alderman powers to impart justice in their disputes and organize a government among them. They gave him the title of King of Patones. Although it was not a real or sovereign monarchy, this gave rise to the legend of the King of Patones that survives today.

The municipality in the middle of the Sierra Norte region of Madrid consists of the lower village Patones de Abajo (more recent) and the upper village Patones de Arriba. The latter, which according to legend was a kingdom in its own right in the 18th century, is a better known visitor destination and one of the most beautiful sites in the region. Its architecture of characteristic black slate houses and cobbled streets cleverly adapted to the mountain slopes gives the place a fascinating flair and makes a tour unforgettable.

Patones is a small municipality located in the center of Spain, in the northeast of Madrid. A path through olive groves leads to the medieval town of Patones de Arriba, famous for its black slate houses and winding streets. The mountain is full of stone ruins of old shepherds' huts. Near the town are the Reguerillo cave, an archaeological site, and the ruins of the Pontón de la Oliva and the hermitage of the Virgen de la Oliva.
