It's really great that there are areas like the Pfrunger-Burgweiler Ried for white storks, because that's how the animals can feed their young. The storks need small animals by the kilo, which they transport to the nest in their throat pouch. The adults also bring the water to their young in their necks to the nest. Due to the immediate proximity in the reed, the animals need little time for flight paths and are thus quickly at the nest when danger threatens.
White storks like to breed close to humans. They are therefore called culture followers.
