Historical paper machine, Bischofszell

The J.M. Voith company built the PM1, a powerful machine that was designed for a working width of 2200 millimeters and 10,000 kilograms/24 hours. It was able to produce a whole range of products from cardboard to crepe paper, which enabled enormous flexibility in the range. Powered by just a single electric motor, the entire machine was set in motion by a sophisticated system of leather transmission belts. The PM1 was in production until 1991.

The 223-ton, 37-meter-long machine shows the process steps of paper production in a rare clarity. In Switzerland, it is the oldest surviving paper machine and today probably the largest with a single drive.

Engineering art of the 1920s. The paper machine PM1 from 1928 with transmissions is located in Bischofszell - in the hall specially built at the time. The first waste paper in Switzerland was produced on it with the watermark "ap".
