The small hamlet of Einsiedel in the Hafenlohr valley was founded around 1260 by the abbey in Neustadt as a provost. In 1483 it became a monastery and was leased.

The place got its dreamy name from the hermit way of life of the residents.

The princes Löwenstein - Wertheim - Rosenberg came into possession of the Würzburg and Neustadt Spessart in the 19th century and set up a glass factory here, in which drinking glasses, bottles, slugs and glass jewelery were manufactured until 1889. A stately oak tree planted on the site of the glassworks commemorates this period.

The high, neo-Gothic chapel made of Mains sandstone was built in 1866 by Heinrich Hübsch on behalf of Princess Sophie for the workers of the glass factory and their families for attending church services.

The single-nave building with a facade turret and a polygonal chancel has a Kreuzrat vault inside, as well as neo-Gothic altars and was consecrated in honor of Saint Hubertus and Burkardus. Today the chapel is still used for baptisms and weddings.

Saint Hubert, to whom the chapel in Einsiedel is dedicated, lived from 655 to 727 and is a very popular saint, best known as the patron saint of hunters. A stag with a glowing cross between its antlers is said to have appeared to him, which is often shown in Hubertus portraits. This legend was originally attributed to Saint Eustace and over time 'migrated' to Hubertus. His memorial day in the calendar of saints is November 3rd.
