The castle of Kruja, dating back to the early 6th century, is considered a historical treasure in Albania. The Skanderbeg Museum or National Museum is located within the fortress and looks like a medieval fortress, but is a new building from the 1980s, when it was opened. The museum honors the national hero Skanderbeg and his significant achievements. Kruja was once considered a center of the Albanian Bektashis, which is why it had several tekkes (temples), of which the Dollmatekke, built in 1788, still stands in the fortress.
