The arenas of Alès date back to the end of the last century. In 1891, a society of bullfighting enthusiasts had bullfighting arenas built in the Tempéras district. The first bullfights took place in the summer of 1891.
Bullfights were banned in the Gard by prefectural decree of August 30, 1895. Nîmes defied the ban. The more cautious and perhaps less passionate Alesians decided to sell their arenas. Passing through the hands of different owners*, they were used for storing wood and coal for a long time until they were bought by the city of Alès in 1965. A local loan was granted for its restoration.
The Tourist Office of Alès offers guided tours all year round.
