Evangelical Church of St. George, Schuls / Scuol

The Reformed Church is a Protestant-Reformed church that was originally dedicated to St. George and was first mentioned in 1178. Its traditional name, which is not common in everyday language, is therefore St. George's Church (Rhaeto-Romanic Baselgia San Geer).

The church is located directly on the rocky slope (Scuol is etymologically related to the Latin scopulus = «rocky outcrop») down to the Inn. A predecessor Carolingian church on the same site burned down in 1258.

A Romanesque church served as a place of worship until the beginning of the 16th century when Bernhard von Puschlav received the order to build a Gothic church.

Around 1530, Scuol joined the Reformation, so that the Georgskirche became a sermon church.

The Scuol church has a nave with a single nave. The choir is in three parts. The stained glass windows were designed by Gian Casty in 1972. There are two windows in the chancel, The Good Shepherd and the Vine, in the nave three white windows and in the oculus - partially covered by the organ - a round window.

Out of gratitude for the courage of the women of Scuol during the Graubünden turmoil, when they resisted Habsburg troops under General Alois Baldiron in 1622, women are still allowed to sit on the right (and thus on the honored side) of the church to this day.
