The rocky plateau on which the historic Dinan was built rises 75 meters above the Rance. Almost completely surrounded by the defiant walls of the fortifications, the old town is still characterized by narrow, winding streets and numerous half-timbered houses, many of them from the 15th and 16th centuries, when Dinan was a major trading city.
Today, Dinan is a National Cultural Monument as the "Ville d'Art et d'Histoire" and proud to be the "best preserved Breton city". And despite the ancient walls and many historic buildings, the city on Rance is bustling and vibrant - anything but a museum village.

The foundation of the city of Dinan can be traced back to its favorable location on the river "Rance". With the rising tide, the boats came up here. The early construction of a bridge favored trade. At first the place was in the valley, but slowly the town also settled up the hill - along today's street "Jerzual" and so the castle on the hill was incorporated.
Dinan became a ducal city in 1283.

Dinan is without doubt one of the most attractive and best preserved small towns in Brittany. With its 1.8 mile (3km)-long ramparts, half-timbered houses, attractive port and cobbled streets filled with art galleries and craft shops, it’s worth a day of anyone’s time.

In the 14th century, Dinan played an important role in the Hundred Years' War and was repeatedly contested.
