The Puʻu Huluhulu Trailhead is the start of the Nāpau Crater Trail along the Mauna Ulu lava shield. The trail leads past four notable craters: in order of distance from the trailhead these are the overgrown Pu’u Huluhulu Cinder Cone, the deep barren chasm of Alae Crater, the flourishing Makaopuhi Crater, and historic Nāpau Crater. Nāpau Crater features a vast overlook to the recently active Pu'u 'Ō'ō cone (which erupted 1983 to 2018) and a cabin which is open for camping reservations.

Mauna Ulu means growing mountain and Mau Loa O Maunaulu means "The Long Ever Growing Mountain" or "The Ever Growing Mountain".
This rest stop on the Chain of Craters Road offers expansive views of the Maunaulu lava flows that repeatedly crossed the road between 1969 and 1974. Mau Loa O Maunaulu is also where the Keauhou Trail begins, leading to backcountry campgrounds along the coast.
On the Mauka (uphill) side of the road there is an expansive view of the Maunaulu lava shield that gave rise to this massive lava field. The glossy glaze of the Pāhoehoe streams is striking. This reflection of the lava is caused by the outer layer of silica, the surface glass. Vegetation in this area is sparse due to the incredibly harsh winds and hard, unruly lava. Everything is like on the moon.
