The "historic town hall" with spy tower was built in the 14th century. After the town fire of 1634, the building was rebuilt from 1636. For this purpose, the imperial city of Nuremberg donated an art clock with the "Spy of Aalen". Since another fire in 1884, only the relief figure of the spy from Aalen has survived. According to a legend, the citizens of the city owe it to the spy from Aalen that they were once spared the destruction by the emperor's army. The building served the city of Aalen as the town hall until 1907. The Geological-Palaeontological Museum has been housed there since 1977.

The museum, opened in 1977 - the largest municipal museum for geology and paleontology in Baden-Württemberg - is located in Aalen directly on the market square in the historic building of the old town hall with the spy tower.

Geology has been a tradition in Aalen for many centuries. Visitors to the museum can obtain comprehensive information about this traditional significance of the Aalen region in geology. On two floors, the friendly collection, assembled according to modern aspects, gives an excellent impression of the structure of the Swabian stratum. Clear display boards convey basic geological knowledge and explain fossil organisms. The variety of wonderful fossils such as dinosaurs, squid, sea lilies or giant ammonites is particularly astonishing.
