The Cathedral of Santa María de Regla dominates León from its historic center and is one of the most important buildings of Spanish Gothic. Built in the 13th century on top of some Roman baths, its stained glass windows, rose windows and towers represent its importance as a basilica for the capital of the medieval kingdom. Its square is a crossing point on the Camino de Santiago and the transit of pilgrims gives it an inspiring traveler atmosphere.

After crossing the Pyrenees on the French Way, pilgrims pass numerous places of worship, small churches, and village chapels. There are also large and magnificent cathedrals. Of particular note is the church in the center of León, described in Cordula Rabe's guidebook as "the most outstanding and stylistically purest early Gothic building on Spanish soil" and inspired by the Cathedral of Reims (France).

The cathedral is an impressive testimony to Gothic architecture and not overly ornate in its way. The building is based on the biblical history of salvation and expresses it convincingly! If you're lucky, you'll get a taste of the organ with its Spanish trumpets.
