The medieval market square was once the economic and political centre of the city, together with the wide old town street, where markets are still held today.

On the northern edge of the market square, on a relatively small area, stood the old town hall, which was probably built around 1200 shortly after the town charter was granted. The ground floor was open to the market square and formed a hall in which the bakers sold their baked goods on their sales benches. The council chamber and the offices of the city administration were on the upper floors. Due to dilapidation, it was demolished in 1820 and replaced in 1823/24 by the construction of a new, larger town hall on the market square in the suburbs.

Behind the old town hall stands the so-called lawyer's house. It was built in 1712 as a "town hall". The large cellar still dates from the previous building, built shortly after 1584. The inscription on the north-west corner post shows the town's coat of arms at the time and names, among others, the lawyer and representative of the citizens: Peter Wannenmann. The house remained in the city's possession until 1747 and probably had similar functions to the town hall. Until the Reformation, the chaplain's house of the St. Nicholas Benefice stood on this spot, which was acquired by the city in 1584.

To the west, the market square is bordered by the so-called Ratsschänke. The building with typical Upper German half-timbered constructions in the outer wall structure and plank wall remains on the long side was built in 1483. At the beginning of the 19th century, the gable roof was demolished along with the third half-timbered floor due to dilapidation and replaced with a hipped roof. It could be that the depiction of the eagle on the coat of arms on the south side was originally a dove, thus referring to the Holy Spirit or to the building's former use as a municipal hospital.

To the east, the so-called Specht'sche Haus from the second half of the 16th century borders the medieval market square. As the remains of the half-timbered wall at the entrance show, the ground floor was also originally half-timbered.
