The Saint-Remi Church in Charleville-Mézières is a neo-Romanesque church built in the 19th century on the site of a former chapel of the Christian Militia, a religious order founded by Charles de Gonzague in 1616. You can admire the impressive stone pulpit, stained glass windows, two organs and a painting on canvas in the transept. The church is dedicated to Saint Rémi, the bishop who baptized Clovis, the first king of the Franks. You can also explore the surrounding area, nicknamed the "little Latin quarter" of Charleville, and discover the richness of its cultural and architectural heritage.

In 1616, Charles de Gonzague founded the equestrian order of the Christian Militia, which he installed in the Grand Priory of the same name in the rue Saint-Michel (now rue de l'Eglise). The initial project was not successful and in the end only half of the priory's buildings were built.

Charles de Gonzague's desired abortion of the cathedral project means that Charleville has no parish church. So it is the chapel of the priory of the Christian militia that is converted into a parish church. It was extended in the 18th century and was in a very advanced state of disrepair when the Charleville council decided to build a parish church worthy of the name in the 1850s.

The église Saint-Rémi was built in 1860-63 in neo-Romanesque style. Since the cathedral that Carlo Gonzaga wanted to build never came to be, the Eglise Saint-Rémi became the parish church of Charleville. The nave contains beautiful stained glass windows, made by the Troeyer studio in Reims in 1953-1954.

A first project by Gautiez in neo-Gothic style, first approved by the committee of inspectors general in 1856, was finally rejected. It was in the 1860s that the Saint-Rémi church was built, according to plans by the diocesan architect Jean François Racine, on the site of the former chapel of the grand priory of the Christian militia, founded by Charles de Gonzague and his wife. The building, in neo-Romanesque style, was completed in 1863.
