THE SOUTH BEACH BRIDGE (Sweden Bridge)

The oldest permanent landing stage in Göhren was the Schwedenbrücke, built in 1813. It offered the King of Sweden good conditions for landing soldiers and equipment on the flat southern beach. But as early as 1815, under the new Prussian government, this bridge lost its military and economic importance and fell into disrepair. Today, the remains of the Schwedenbrücke act as groyne-like sand traps and protect the coast, which is in severe decline. In 1894, the remains of the “Swedish Bridge” were built over with a makeshift wooden footbridge. The disembarked passengers from the Greifswald excursion and bathing steamers that were lying in the roadstead landed on this wide, short bridge with railings. The southern beach was better protected against strong winds and swells, which is why a pier for direct mooring was to be built here. However, the water on Göhren's southern beach was so shallow that the pier opened in 1909 had to be over 1,000 meters long, which was a sensation and also became a press topic inland. But as early as 1914, at the start of the First World War, parts of the bridge were demolished to prevent enemy troops from landing. After the war, parts of the wooden structure were sold and a new building failed due to financial resources.
