The old town of Santiago de Compostela

The historic old town of Santiago de Compostela, together with the cathedral, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. The tangle of alleyways in the old town is best explored on foot. The sights are not far apart.

The tour to the roof of the cathedral is really worthwhile. The tour costs 12€ and for pilgrims 10€.

The historical and monumental complex that is concentrated in the old town of Santiago is worth visiting and seeing it on a quiet walk. The charm of its streets and its buildings is even greater for those of us who come from the south.

The whole area is very well cared for and perhaps too crowded. The restaurant and commercial offer in the area is very complete.

It is a beautiful old town with beautiful parks. Those who make a pilgrimage should book their hostel two days in advance if possible. Otherwise there might not be any bed available if arrival is late afternoon.

It is worth making a detour to the Herbon Monastery on the way to Santiago de Compostella. A wonderful hostel with old cork trees and a beautiful garden. In front of the monastery is a large camellia that was in full bloom in early May. Fantastic.

Santiago de C. has gained importance particularly since the Middle Ages. The old town with its lovely little streets and beautiful shops and restaurants is always worth a look. Unfortunately, there is only one supermarket left for the local population in the center. But an old hat shop has managed to survive. Men come from far away to buy their hats here.
