"From Mulberry to Silk"

"From Mulberry to Silk", which had a wide response at regional, national and international levels ...

Today our cooperative has decided to rehabilitate this project, making Gelsibachicoltura its main activity. We follow the entire process, from the land to the production of the precious yarn. We move in a very interesting naturalistic context where our mulberry tree is located, which has about 3,000 plants of the Kokusò variety. For us, the cultivation of this shrub of Asian origin represents the soul of the work, since its leaves are the only source of food for the silkworm. The Mediterranean climate is the significant availability of leaves, allowing us to do 3 annual farms between April and September. Our manufacturing process reflects the old traditional canons as we craft fabrics on old 4-line looms. The yarn is then dyed with natural products (poppy, madder, Morus nigra, broom, Cirò grapes, leafy daisies, Tropea onions, etc.).

Nido di Seta is a group of young Calabrians who have decided to take on a very special challenge, to return and stay in Calabria. Our keywords are the protection of the environment and the landscape, the growth of the territory and sustainable development. We intend to start again from the "Earth", ours, and to exploit the resources that it offers us. We take the ancient chain of Gelsibachicoltura and make it our main activity, building day by day this virtuous circuit that manages to orchestrate artisan, cultural, artistic and culinary moments, making our home a point of attraction for national and international tourism make. It is not our intention to engage in rhetoric or sterile narrow mindedness, what we affirm and what we do is practiced with a sense of belonging but at the same time with professionalism and a desire to grow.
