The Dobbertin monastery was founded in 1220 as a Benedictine monastery, but no male monasteries could survive in Mecklenburg in the Middle Ages, as the monastery was converted into a women's monastery in 1234. The women's convents and monasteries served not only the spiritual function, but also the care of aristocratic daughters and widows, who brought large property with them and thus contributed to the strengthening of the monastery.
It was a nunnery for almost 350 years and a nunnery for almost 400 years. Since 1947 it has been an old people's home and mental hospital and since 1991 it has been a welfare work.
Today the Diakoniewerk runs the Dobbertin monastery.
The Diakoniewerk Kloster Dobbertin, a non-profit limited company, faces the challenge of being there for people in need, it takes on a wide variety of tasks in the areas of education and social work. You focus on people.
The Dobbertin monastery is a building and ground monument of supra-regional importance. But it is also a place where disabled people live, live, work, receive an education and spend their free time. That's why we divided the facility into "public", "semi-public" and "private" zones.
