Church of San Leonardo, Borgia
In the historic center of Borgia, along Corso Mazzini, we find the Church of San Leonardo, a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture. The building, of unknown origin, was completely restored after 1783, the year of the earthquake that destroyed the entire town of Borgia. The church was already modified at the beginning of the last century but has retained the single-nave floor plan with a pedimented façade: this is characterized by a large triangular pediment punctuated by a double cornice, two Doric-style pilasters and a lancet portal in which the polished stone traces the perimeter of the door itself. On it, right in the middle of the facade, is the niche with the statue of Saint Leonhard. The bell tower at the back of the building still houses two bells, replacing those cast during the Fascist regime to commemorate Italy's participation in World War II. A particularly interesting bell remains inside, probably from the destroyed Church of San Leonardo before the late eighteenth-century earthquake. However, the most interesting artistic works are of a pictorial nature: among these we point out the two canvases of the local artist of international fame Ugo Ortona, very active in the first half of the last century, and Giuseppe Rocca.
