The Church of the Sacred Sepulcher was consecrated in 1117 by the Vallombrosian monks who had built it.

The church was built according to the scheme with a "Croce Commissa" plan, a particular type of cross in which the crosspiece is placed at the top of the vertical part, whose shape recalls the letter T.

The church was enlarged in 1500 with the construction of the Chapel of the Holy Sepulcher, where the statuary group of the Lamentation over Dead Christ triumphed and forty years later it was restructured and renewed in the decorations with fresco cycles by the painters Cristoforo Baschenis the Elder and Giovan Battista Guarinoni.

During the seventeenth century various structures were built, the sacristy, the bell tower and the deep presbytery, which enlarged the complex.

With the monastic order suppressed by Napoleonic decree in 1797, the church, a subsidiary complex of the Ospedale Maggiore, was used as a mental hospital between 1832 and 1892.

It was subsequently sold to private individuals in 1923.
