For centuries, the collegiate church of St. Philipp and Jakob has risen majestically on a hill above Bad Grönenbach and has shaped the townscape.

Inside you can see a wide three-aisled Gothic church with artistic furnishings from different centuries.

The whole room looks festive and inviting.

I found the church open.

In 1559, the Reich Marshal Count Philipp von Pappenheim introduced the Reformation in Grönenbach. In the first post-Reformation decades, the collegiate church served as a place of worship for both the Catholic and the Evangelical-Reformed community. The resulting power struggles and religious-political disputes only came to peace when the congregations were firmly established and each had secured its place of worship: the Catholic collegiate church and the Protestant hospital church.

The Catholic church on Stiftsberg in Bad Grönenbach has a long history. The first church on this site was consecrated in 1136 by Bishop Walter of Augsburg in honor of the apostles Peter, Philip and James and many martyrs.

The crypt and the basement of the tower of this Romanesque church are still there today. As the church became too small or dilapidated over time, a new one was built on the same site around 300 years later. It was consecrated in 1445. This Gothic church still exists today, but its furnishings have been changed time and again and adapted to the style of the time.
