The name Sammarei is derived from the popularly translated Sancta Maria. The original chapel, dating from before 1619 (a chapel was mentioned as early as 1521), has been preserved; Isaac Bader built the present Baroque church around this chapel. Approximately 1,300 votive images can be seen in the ambulatory surrounding the chapel, which is located behind the altar wall. The church is also known locally as the Lower Bavarian Wieskirche or the Bavarian Assisi. The opulent complex is considered unique in the art of sacred decoration in southern Germany. (Wikipedia)
