After passing the small town of Arcade and its beautiful gardens, you come face to face with this bridge, which goes over the River Verdugo. On the other side is the town of Puente Sampayo (or Ponte Sampaio in Galician), a parish of Pontevedra. The Battle of Pontesampaio of the Spanish War of Independence took place here, ending the French occupation after five months.

Although the origin of the construction is Roman, it does not preserve elements of that time. The current structure responds to the Middle Ages. Elongated construction made up of ten arcades between which are embankments. As an anecdotal fact, it should be noted that the famous battle of Ponte Sampaio against the French was fought on this bridge in 1809. The beauty of the area is remarkable, from where we have a beautiful view of the Peneda del Viso and the mouth of the River Verdugo.

It is said that the legendary fortress of San Paio de Lodo was located near this bridge, where the armies of Doña Urraca and Archbishop Gelmírez clashed. It is also said that a few years earlier, in 997, Almanzor crossed it, destroying the fortress that defended it.
