Burgstaaken is a small town with a combined municipal and marina on the southern coast of the Baltic island of Fehmarn. It is protected from the Baltic Sea by the Burger Binnensee lake. The port is connected by the Staakensweg - an old cobblestones - with castle on Fehmarn.

The harbor is not only a yacht, but also a municipal port. In addition to some fishing, it is a transshipment point for grain. (about 50,000 - 60,000 t / y). In addition to the U-Boat Museum, the Sea Rescue Museum with the Armed Forces cruiser Arwed Emminghaus can be visited.

From 1920 to 1952, steamships operated scheduled services to Lübeck and Kiel.

The port of Burgstaaken experienced its first major tourism boom thanks to the "Butterdampfer" (butter steamers). In 1975, the port was expanded to accommodate the larger ships.

The butter steamers operated until the end of 1998.

The last butter steamers were the MS "POSEIDON" and the MS "DANIA."

Up to 400,000 passengers traveled annually on the butter steamers from Burgstaaken.

In 1999, the Burgstaaken Harbor Business Association (Gewerbeverein Hafen Burgstaaken e.V.) was founded.

This association's mission is to further develop the port for tourism and to enliven it with events.

The "Erlebnishafen Burgstaaken" (Burgstaaken Adventure Harbor) was created.

Fish markets are held here three times a year, and the major harbor festival is held every two years.

Since 1999, a constantly growing range of tourist attractions has developed.

Burgstaaken has become a waterfront promenade.
