Rethymno (Greek Ρέθυμνο [ˈrɛθimnɔ] (n. sg.), obsolete also Rethymnon) is a port city in the north of the Greek island of Crete. It is the third largest city on the island after Heraklion and Chania and, as a municipality of the same name (Δήμος Ρεθύμνου, Dimos Rethymnou), forms the center of the regional district of Rethymno.

In addition to Heraklion, Rethymno is one of the two locations of the University of Crete, the location of a state hospital and was also the port of call for ferries from Piraeus until October 2008.
The area of Rethymno was inhabited as early as the Neolithic period (6000−2600 BC). Archaeological finds from the Idaean Cave (Ιδαίον Άντρον, Ideon Andron) in the Psiloritis Massif, from the Gerani Cave west of Rethymno and from Elenon in the Amari area testify to this. The first indications of a settlement in the city of Rethymno come from the late Minoan period (1350-1250 BC). A rock tomb containing grave goods was uncovered in the southern district of Mastabas. A cemetery at Armeni, which belongs to the municipal area of the town, belongs to the same period. Near this place there was a settlement on the Onythe plateau of Mount Vrysinas in the subsequent Geometric and Classical periods (1100−620 BC).

Rethymno (Greek: Ρέθυμνο, [ˈreθimno], also Rethimno, Rethymnon, Réthymnon, and Rhíthymnos) is a city in Greece on the island of Crete. It is the capital of Rethymno regional unit, and has a population of more than 30,000 (near 40,000 for the municipal unit). It is a former Latin Catholic bishopric as Retimo(–Ario) and former Latin titular see.

Rethymno was originally built during the Minoan civilization (ancient Rhithymna and Arsinoe). The city was prominent enough to mint its own coins and maintain urban growth. One of these coins is today depicted as the crest of the town: two dolphins in a circle.
