Here you will find a special reminder of the Iron Age: in prehistoric times there were small fields here, measuring about 40 by 40 metres. These are also called Celtic fields, but don't let that fool you: the fields have nothing to do with the Celts at all. It has everything to do with the farmers of that time, who had to work hard in the fields to provide food for a few families.

The Wekeromse Zand near Ede was already inhabited in the Iron Age. The largest Celtic fields complex in our country is located in this area. Celtic fields are prehistoric fields that consist of fields of approximately 40 x 40 meters, surrounded by ramparts. Viewed from the air, Celtic fields look like a honeycomb. Celtic fields turned out to be a pertinent misnomer as the fields have nothing to do with Celts. Nevertheless, raatakker has never been able to completely replace the incorrect English name. The Wekeromse Zand was already inhabited in the Iron Age. The area contains one of the largest Celtic fields complexes in our country. Celtic fields are small prehistoric fields. It is a special relic from the Iron Age. Celtic fields consisted of square fields of about forty by forty meters, surrounded by little walls. Iron Age farmers preferred sandy soil. It was easy to edit. When the poor soil was exhausted, the farmer moved up a field. Much work yielded little. Probably this area could only feed two or three families. (source: glk.nl)
