During the second half of the 19th century, monastic orders reestablished themselves in the city as a result of the revival of Catholicism. The Redemptorist Fathers settled on the Tweede Nieuwstraat, now Sint Josephstraat. On December 5, 1859, the church, dedicated to Saint Joseph but popularly known as 'Paterskerk', was inaugurated. The building was one of the first to be built in neo-gothic style. The monastery complex to the right of the church.
