Although the fortress may not look as interesting from the outside, it's definitely worth a visit!

Anyone who comes to Corfu and looks for a modern building while searching for the new fortress will nevertheless always find a great island that could hardly be greener and more flourishing, but they will probably miss the fortress. The new fortress did not get its name because it was only built a few years ago, but only because it is newer than the old fortress. The new fortress, or "Neo Frourio", has been standing since 1576 and was the reaction of the then ruling Venetians to the Turkish siege. It is considered the western end of the old town and stands on a hill between the old and new harbors. The harbor gate is decorated with a relief showing the Venetians' symbol, the winged lion of St. Mark. There is even said to be an underground passageway connecting the new and old fortress. However, it is so secret that no one is allowed to visit it under any circumstances. So whether it really exists or whether this claim is simply used to fuel legends and to scare enemies today is a moot point.

The Venetian fortress was expanded and repaired by the English around 1645. The new fortress can only be reached on foot. If you set off from the New Fortress Square, you can go straight to the entrance of the fortress via Odós Solomú. Visitors can access the interior of the complex via a stone staircase and after paying an entrance fee of around 3.00 euros. The fortress is not only worth a visit for its own sake, but also to visit the café or the gallery located there. In the gallery, visitors can see the very interesting history of the creation of Corfiot ceramics from antiquity to the present day. What you can do in the café should be self-explanatory. And if that is not enough for you, you can simply go on an exploration tour through the old, sometimes very dark, corridors and chambers of the fortress. From the highest point of the new fortress, the roof of the citadel, visitors have a breathtaking panoramic view of the city of Corfu and Kerkyra. This view alone is worth climbing the fortress.
