Contemporary monument commemorating Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia. It was unveiled to the public on February 17, 2008, the day of Kosova's unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia, and has been one of the city's most recognizable monuments ever since.
The idea came to the artistic director of marketing agency Ogilvy Kosova, Fisnik Ismaili, just ten days before the official statement. The production of the monument began before it was even certain whether the organizers of the independence celebration would pay for it. Upon completion, it was presented to enthusiastic government officials, who raised the necessary funds and made the monument's unveiling an official part of the Independence celebrations.
The artist chose this English word because it only has positive connotations and the single words "new" and "born" can also be understood by people who don't speak much English. The Republic of Kosovo should be presented as a new, contemporary and modern country. Newborn was painted yellow because this color, together with blue banners, represents both the color of the new Kosovar flag and the colors of the European Union flag. As part of the advertising campaign, the slogans "NEW life is BORN", "NEW hope is BORN", "NEW future is BORN" and "NEW country is BORN" (New land is born) is selected.
