The fossil dunes are located in the Ferrara hinterland between the Po di Volano and that of Goro. The reserve protects a sequence of fossil dunes unique in the regional panorama which today testifies to the position of a line of the Adriatic coast of 12 km away from the sea ... almost unthinkable, dating back to the Bronze Age, about 3000 years does.
The gentle undulations of the land, covered by low prairies, alternate with valleys reoccupied today by shrubs and strips of wood, rise only a few meters above the countryside, but strongly contrast with the boundless surrounding cultivated plain, a landscape profoundly modified by the human activity that has reclaimed the vast swampy areas of the past.
The only drawback of this enchanting place in the countryside, the not too well-kept state of the location as a poorly maintained weed mowing, rotten fence posts and wooden tables in a bit of neglect.
