The Buddhist House is a Buddhist temple complex or Vihâra in Berlin and is considered the oldest Buddhist temple in Europe.

The builder of the Buddhist house was the doctor and writer Paul Dahlke, who ran a practice in Berlin and got to know Buddhism on his trips to Asia. In 1900 he himself became a Buddhist and a teacher of this religion, translated a number of old Buddhist writings from the ancient Indian Pali language into German and published the New Buddhist Magazine.

Seizing a sponsorship from the authorities, Dr. Dahlke bought the whole hill in Berlin-Frohnau in the early 1920s, which the Protestant community refused to purchase because of the long walk and difficult climb.

In record time, he had the main building, the meditation retreats and the washroom built according to his plans, which were inspired by Asian buildings. Part of the garden was already finished in 1924. The exhibition room followed in 1926, also used as a lecture hall. This hall later became the temple. The almost ascetic way of life of Dr. Dahlke, who also demanded this kind of life from everyone else, turned the house and practice into a "Buddhist house". Unfortunately, Dr. Dahlke just four years after founding the Buddhist House in February 1928.

With the outbreak of the war, Buddhist activity had to stop, the tolerant teachings with their all-encompassing loving kindness were undesirable to the authorities. After the war, the house accommodated refugees, for whose number its facilities were completely insufficient. There were no longer any financial means to repair and run the house. Even a demolition was considered. A sale failed due to serious prospects. The edge of the hill was gradually sold all around.

In 1957, Mr. Asoka Weeraratna acquired the Buddhist House and the centerpiece of the land. In 1958 the German Dharmaduta Society bought two more remaining pieces of land from Mr. Dahlke's heirs. The main house has been completely renovated.

In the year 2000, the Buddhist house experienced a renewal on all levels. The long-needed repairs are planned (and now mostly completed) and apart from the usual activities, such as lectures and meditations, a targeted program for spreading the Buddha's teachings to the broad masses is taking place. Life in the Buddhist House is a typical example of Theravāda Buddha teachings. Everything is casual for the lay follower. Everyone can deal with the teaching in their own way. There is no membership fee or church tax. There are lectures on Sundays and meditations five times a week.
