The colorful front doors of Prerow are real eye-catchers. The tradition of this unusual door decoration began between 1790 and 1850, but only with one color. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that the decision was made to give the doors different colors. Today, the front doors are popular photo subjects and delight every visitor as they stroll through the streets of Prerow.

Traditions play a major role in the Fischland-Darß-Zingst region. The most visible remnants of the past are probably the colorful doors that adorn many of the houses on the peninsula, especially on the Darß.
Their appearance has changed considerably in the last 200 years. Anyone who thinks that the doors have always been colorful is wrong. At their original peak, between 1790 and 1850, the typical Darß doors were monochrome and, apart from their rich ornamentation, rather plain. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century, when the doors became an identifying feature of the region, that they were given the colorful paintwork that is so typical today.
