Around 1510, the Venetian monk Bernardo Vincelli ventured into the distillation of local plants and oriental herbs. Based on the elixir obtained, Alexandre le Grand, a merchant from Fécamp, creates the famous Bénédictine in 1963. He puts the motto of the monastic order on each bottle: DOM or Deo Optimo Maximo ('to the supreme and most glorious God').
About thirty plants, herbs and spices are used to make this delicious liqueur, including angelica root, hyssop, melissa, pine cone, wormwood, cinnamon, aloe and juniper. The Bénédictine can be drunk (in moderation) in a cocktail or as a digestif.
