Fulling barrels were also used in the Kirn leather industry for many years. In the rotating barrels, the hides were fulled to remove the hair, tanned and, after further processing, processed into finished leather and dyed. While fulling barrels were first used in industrial leather production, in the centuries before, the hides were tanned in tanning pits lined with oak beams and planks.
