The lighthouse was built in 1870 replacing its 1802 predecessor. In 1999 it had to be moved a half mile because it was in danger of falling into the Atlantic due to the shifting of the Outer Banks.
In the lighthouse keeper's house there is an interesting exhibition on the lighthouse and the Outer Banks, including some German submarine exhibits from WW1 and WW2
