The first settlements were built on the lake as early as 3,000 years before Christ. 300 years after Christ the Romans built the Arbor Felix fort and 1000 years later the city of Arbon was founded at this very location and surrounded by a city wall. From the end of the 19th century, an industry with a global reach also developed.
