The renovation of the Hagneck Canal, which is now more than a hundred years old, between 2011 and 2015 not only improves protection against flooding, but also enhances the natural habitats and links them more closely with their surroundings. In the Espenmoos, the focus of the ecological measures, various typical floodplain habitats are to develop over time.
The new branch of the Aare is a varied stretch of water with variable currents and shallow water areas. It becomes an ideal habitat for juvenile fish of endangered species such as grayling or brook lamprey.
Due to the expansion in Espenmoos including a new side arm, a piece of the former flood dam has become an island. As the previous block shoring has been removed there, the shape of the island and its vegetation will naturally evolve and change.
