Probably the most famous sanctuary dedicated to the Archangel Michael is in France. It is the "Mont-Saint-Michel", in the far north of the country on an island in front of Normandy. This unique monastery island is not only a place of worship, but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The church was built in Romanesque style in the 13th century. In 1475 it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, so valuable furnishings were lost. In the middle of the 17th century, the baroque arrived. In the 19th century the municipality decided to restore it to the Gothic style. Last renovation in 2002.
