St. James' Church in Mitwitz is a Protestant Lutheran church, first documented as a chapel in 1425. It contains remarkable wall paintings dating from around 1470/80 in the choir, as well as various gravestones and epitaphs of the Lords of Würzburg. The church received its present appearance primarily in the years 1572/74 and 1600/1602. The interior was altered, particularly around 1730, and later renovated in 1912, 1959, and 1999. The church is located on a hill above the village and was once surrounded by a defensive wall.

The parish of Mitwitz has about 1550 parishioners in Mitwitz and the districts of Burgstall, Kaltenbrunn, Bächlein, Neundorf, Schwärzdorf and Häusles.
Mitwitz has been Protestant since the Reformation, with the exception of brief interruptions in the Thirty Years' War.
The Jakobskirche stands in an elevated position in the community. It was built in pre-Reformation times, then rebuilt and expanded several times in the 16th and 17th centuries. It remains the center of the community to this day.
Directly attached to it is the parish hall, the "old school", where the various groups in the parish meet.
