In addition to its original main purpose of shipping, the canal also serves to feed Lippe water into the West German canal network. For this purpose, the Lippe is dammed in Hamm. In the water distribution system between the weir and the sluice, the amount of water to be fed into the DHK can be controlled by flap weirs (up to 25 m³/s). The Lippe water flows through the feed structure above the weir, which was extended by a second one in 1965, from the dammed Lippe into the Hamm canal system and next to the lock through the free flood with a natural gradient down the DHK. This supplies the Datteln-Hamm, Dortmund-Ems, Rhein-Herne and Wesel-Datteln canals with process water.
