Until the 1920s, there were only 14 bridges on the 240 km long part of the "German" Moselle, but 50 high-wire ferries, also known as pontoons. These unpowered ferries shaped the landscape with their cable towers.

The ferry towers in Trittenheim are the only pair of ferry towers that have been preserved on the Moselle between Perl and Koblenz. The Trittenheim ferry towers have been documented since the time of the Electors.

The basic structure of the building on the local bank of the Moselle can be dated to around 1740. This would make this ferry tower somewhat older than the ferry towers in Schweich and Mehring, which were probably built after the floods of 1783/84 under Elector Clemens Wenzes.

They served as the ferryman's home and residence. The rope of the Ponten ferry (Latin: pons = bridge, dam / ponto = ferry, transport ship) was also anchored to them. These ferry towers bear witness to a Ponten ferry service from 1829 to 1908/09, the year the first Trittenheim Moselle bridge was completed.

A small documentation of Trittenheim and its neighboring towns has been created in the lower room of the tower, and the upper floor will serve as a meeting place for the "Trittenheim young winemakers" and a rest area for hikers.

Downstream on the Moselle, about 100 m from the two ferry towers, the "Trittenheim ferry rock" protrudes from the mountain on the right bank of the Moselle. This is where the ferries originally landed.
