Kirchhellen was an independent municipality in the Recklinghausen district from 1934 to 1976. In the course of municipal reorganization in the Ruhr area, Kirchhellen was merged with the independent city of Bottrop on July 1, 1976 (see Glabotki).

The place name is derived from church on the hill (Helle) and refers to the historic site of the old village church, which was located on a hill in the village and was destroyed by a fire in 1917. Today's village is characterized by the St. John's Church, consecrated in 1925 and located on the main street.

Today Kirchhellen is one of the three urban districts of Bottrop in the northern Ruhr area on the border to the Münsterland with its own district administration office and district representation.

Kirchhellen is known nationally to neighboring countries for the Movie Park Germany (formerly Warner Bros. Movie World) in Feldhausen. Other attractions are the Feldhausen amusement park Schloss Beck and the Kirchhellen rifle and pretzel festival.
