Chapel «St.Anton von Padua», in St. Anton
The consecration certificate of the St. Antonius chapel on the St. Anton, which was destroyed by lightning on June 20th, 1931, is dated May 2nd, 1932. If now in Oberegg on the St. Anton in 2002 on the second weekend in June the 70th year -celebration was celebrated, so it was justified to take a look at the checkered history of the chapel. The origins of the chapel of St. Anthony of Padua (1195-1231) cannot be determined historically. According to legendary tradition, after the historically proven battle of 1428 on Honegg, in which the Appenzellers defeated a raiding party of Frederick VII of Toggenburg, the Obereggers buried the fallen "on the Egg with St. Anthony". There are also traditional testimonies that around the middle of the 15th century the concerns and intercessions of believers were answered by St. Anthony "at the wayside shrine on the Egg". Finally, the evidence on the question of the patronage of St. Anthony of Padua is unclear. In the traditional justifications, references to the influence of Franciscan nuns from the surrounding monasteries can be found again and again. In the "Appenzeller Document Book" there is a passage in the "Wegbrief der environment am Hirschberg" from 1470, according to which the path leading from Marbach branches off "at the picture towards Grauenstein". The chronicler Gabriel Walser also writes of the "little wayside shrine where the tired Rhine Valley residents take a rest on their journey to St. Gallen and also bring their concerns to the great Saint Antonius".
