Why was the Leopold Canal built?
The creek area is not much higher than sea level. For centuries, the excess water has been led away to the Scheldt via streams, locks and weirs. In 1830, Belgium broke away from the Netherlands. All passages to the Scheldt were now on Dutch territory. The Dutch closed all locks and dams, so that the water from the Belgian polders, creeks and streams could no longer flow away. Belgium decided to dig its own canal for the drainage of the area: the Leopold Canal!
The Leopold Canal runs all the way across Belgian territory, from Boekhoute to Heist, and is 43 kilometers long. The design dates from 1842. Years later, the canal was completely excavated with a shovel and wheelbarrow. We are standing here near the beginning of the canal. Only further on does the canal get its typical appearance, with high canal banks and two rows of trees on top.
