The largest, most luxurious and perhaps the most beautiful castle in the Netherlands.
It was built from 1892 on the ruins of the old castle in neo-Gothic style.
In 1890, Baron Étienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt van de Haar inherited the castle ruins from his father. Étienne was married to Baroness Hélène de Rothschild, an heiress from the French branch of the wealthy De Rothschild banking family.
Partly thanks to her fortune, Étienne had the means to have the ancestral castle rebuilt in a spectacular way.
The famous architect Pierre Cuypers was called in to rebuild the castle, who spent twenty years working on it in close collaboration with his son Joseph Cuypers.
De Haar Castle is no longer owned by the Van Zuylen family. In 2000, the castle and the park immediately surrounding it (55 hectares in size) became the property of Stichting Kasteel de Haar.
The Haarzuilens Estate (350 hectares) came into the possession of Natuurmonumenten.
Only the châtelet remained the property of the family. However, the family still observes the tradition of "the September habitation". They have the right to occupy the castle in that month.
