At the request of lord Giselbert, a wealthy landlord, some Premonstratensians from Antwerp's Saint Michael's Abbey settled around 1130 on his estate in Tongerlo.

This young monastic foundation originated in the context of the ecclesiastical renewal movement around Norbert van Gennep, which had started in Prémontré (F) around 1121 with a community of canons regular.

In order to ensure its active existence, waste lands were cultivated. Prosperity and disaster alternated. There were times of growth and expansion in 'all' areas of society at the time. Striking lines of force were the pastoral services in forty churches and the prayer services with a permanent core of choirmasters. In addition to active poor relief, extensive patronage developed on many fronts of art, culture and science.
