    City Hall, Maienfeld
Maienfeld, a brief historical overview of the third city on the Rhine
The emergence of the historic town
Nothing is known exactly about the origin of the historic town. What is certain, however, is that the settlement was built before the Romans invaded. However, it is assumed that it was a little further towards the St. Luzisteig. Various bronze finds and a so-called shell stone, which was discovered at the top of the town in an old cellar vault, are considered proof of the pre-Roman origin of the settlement.
The first written information about the existence of the settlement comes from the year 831. At that time the settlement was called Lupinis. Even in Roman times it was called Statio Maiensis or Magia. The place name is said to have changed over the centuries as follows: from Magia to Lupinis, from Magenza to Lupinis again, then from Lopine, Maging, Magen to Luppinis and Lupis. In 1295 the name Maienvelt appears for the first time. Personal names are said to be in the names Maging and Lupinis, but this could never be properly proven.
It is not known and unfortunately not mentioned anywhere when the town received its town charter, the ring walls and the ditch. However, it is generally assumed that this happened in the 11th or 12th century. The town had three gates; the Linden or Churertor, the Lindauer-Bregenzertor and the Rheintörlein, which led to the so-called Schifflände. It is well known where the gates were, but nothing remains of them today.
On the other hand, the original city walls have been preserved in three places, in front of the Churertor, at the Pfrundhaus and below the town hall. The castle, today's Schloss Maienfeld, was closely connected to the town, but had its own fortress walls and was outside the town. During this time and later during the Bündner turmoil, many fights take place on the Luzisteig. The town suffered a lot from this. At the same time, the plague killed more than half of the population within a year. Eight big fires are mentioned, the whole city burned down in the war year 1622. In order to protect themselves from looters, often Austrian hordes, a separate militia in uniforms in the city colors was formed in Maienfeld. Even before the Reformation, first mentioned around 1510, an elementary school was founded, which was particularly famous under Hans Ardüser in 1577.
